Researches—- Emperor’s Costume

Firstly, I started with the costumes, I conducted a series of research on the Qin Dynasty costumes and consulted relevant materials to determine the overall style and colours of the costumes.

Resource for the crown

This is a form that shows the structure of the crown in Qin.

Coronet, is the ancient imperial courtiers to participate in sacrificial ceremonies worn by the ceremonial crown, used as the emperor, the dukes and so on to wear the sacrificial dress. On the top of the crown there is a rectangular plate with a rounded front and a square back, and there are “coronet combs” hanging before and after the coronet plate. Coronet comb according to the number and quality of different materials, is an important symbol of distinction between the lowly and the honourable. Han Dynasty, the emperor’s crown for twelve (i.e., twelve rows), for the jade system. The colour of the crown, mainly black. Coronet on both sides, each has a hole, to insert the jade axe, in order to tie the knot with the bun, and in the calculation of the two sides of the ribbon, in the collar under the knot. In the two ears on the ribbon, but also each hanging a bead of jade, called “Yun ear”. Not stuffed into the ear, just hanging in the ear, to remind the wearer of the crown must not listen to slander. Later generations of “allow the ear does not hear” phrase, that is, from this. According to the regulations, all wearers of the crown, have to wear a coronation dress. Coronet to Xuan upper garment, vermilion coloured lower garment, the top and bottom of the painted chapter pattern. In addition, there is also a cover knee, wear a ribbon, red and so on.

Resource shows the imperial costume is mostly black in Qin Dynasty.

It was found that Emperor Qin Shi Huang stipulated that the dress for formal occasions in the Qin Dynasty must be mainly in black. The reason for this is that Qin Shi Huang believed in the five elements, Qin replaced Shang and Shang dynasty was fire in five elements, so Qin Shi Huang believed that Qin was water and black was the colour that represented water, that makes Qin dynasty revered black.

bronze

Bronze was the main metal used in China before it entered the Iron Age, and people cast many vessels in bronze and then carved them with beautiful patterns to make them a work of art. In order to add texture to my design, I chose to research the patterns of bronze vessels from around the Qin Dynasty as a way to apply this visual element to my design.
